Residual Reality

In 2009, I designed a title installation for a photography show called Residual Reality. The exhibition was named after a phrase the late Robert Heinecken coined. His enthusiasm for the found photograph "was based on the fact that there was some residual illusion of reality in it always." I interpreted this as a title broken into disparate perspectives, where its readability and its reality were seemingly destroyed.

As viewers walked down the hallway toward the gallery entrance, the letter fragments began to solidify.

Just as they enter the gallery, the pieces come together to create the fleeting illusion of readability. A couple step after they enter, the illusion is gone.

For the exhibition catalogue, I showed type fragments in a different way. I created a logo, self-contained and surrounded by white, with the idea that I would use it for other promotional material.

The logo was plastered on posters and fliers.
